A web service is a software application that is uniquely identifiable with a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and whose interfaces can be defined, described and found as XML artefacts. A web service supports direct interaction with other software agents using XML-based messages through exchange via internet-based protocols. For example, the following functions can be performed via web services: Creating objects, retrieving information of a single object, editing characteristics of a single object, retrieving lists, deleting objects, assigning and separating objects. Secure access to the dates of the other system is ensured by the fact that authentication at the system takes place separately from the execution of the actual function. No data exchange can take place without successful login. The advantage of this method is that up-to-date data can be made available online at any time; as soon as information is entered in one system, it is available in the other system.
