MySQL is an open source database for SQL. It can be used to store and manage large amounts of data.

The database was created in 1995 by Michael Widenius and David Axmark, two Finnish computer programmers. They wanted to create a more user-friendly fork of the earlier Ingres project. They wanted their new product is also accessible to people who are not trained computer scientists and do not want to deal with complicated SQL commands.

An open source database does not require any licence fees (like a professional database, for example). Microsoft SQL Server or a Oracle database), which makes it very economical for companies and private individuals to dates to store in a database. However, support here must be purchased via forums or a paid service.

MySQL is used, for example, as a backend for web applications such as Facebook and Wikipedia or numerous smaller web projects. It is also used as a data store by other databases such as PostgreSQL and MariaDB.
